Early season deer numbers lower; turkey numbers steady

Hunters harvested fewer deer during the early hunting season in September and October compared with last year.
However, turkey hunters reported taking 119 wild turkeys (Allegany County 35; Garrett 51; Washington 33) during the one week fall season that ended Nov. 5. The harvest of 116 turkeys was similar to 2015.

Elk hunt successful for 78% of hunters

More than 78 percent of the hunters participating in the 2016 elk hunt took home a trophy.
During the week-long elk season that ended Nov. 5, a total of 97 elk were taken by hunters. Those licensed to hunt antlered elk had a 96 percent success rate.

Driver’s license, wildlife checkpoints start Nov. 13

Game wardens, Kansas Highway Patrol troopers and county sheriff’s officers will conduct joint highway checkpoints at various locations November 13.

3-state monitoring program launched for bovine TB

Kentucky is participating in a three-state effort with Indiana and Ohio to test white-tailed deer for the presence of bovine tuberculosis.
While bovine tuberculosis is an infectious disease that primarily affects cattle, it also can infect deer. The disease has not been detected in Kentucky’s deer herd.

Hunter and turkey numbers decline in fall firearms season

Hunters checked 3,698 turkeys during Missouri’s fall firearms turkey season, Oct. 1 through 31. Last year’s fall firearms turkey harvest total was 6,158.

Despite poor weather, youth hunters successful

Young hunters harvested 246 deer during the 2016 Youth Deer Hunt Weekend, down 37 percent from the official 2015 total of 391.

Moose hunters see 72% success rate for 2016

Preliminary reports indicate 52 hunters succeeded in taking a moose during the state’s 9-day season which ended Oct. 23. With a total of 72 permits issued, the statewide success rate hit 72 percent compared to the 2015 overall success rate of 69 percent.
