• Patuxent Research Refuge Announces Turkey Hunting Opportunities for Hunters with Disabilities: The Patuxent Research Refuge and the Meade Natural Heritage Association (MNHA), in Laurel, Maryland, are pleased to announce that opportunities for mobility-impaired and disabled individuals are available during the spring wild turkey hunt on the refuge.
Turkey Hunt Dates for 2011-2012 for mobility impaired and disabled hunters: April 16, April 23, April 30, May 7, May 14, May 21
“This is a great opportunity for Patuxent Research Refuge and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to offer hunting opportunities for individuals who enjoy the sport, but mobility impediments prevent them from participating in traditional hunting methods,” says Refuge Manager Brad Knudsen.
Prospective hunters must have a Maryland hunting license, MNHA hunting permit, and a hunter safety card to be eligible. Disabled and mobility-impaired hunters must show a physician’s certification of disability eligibility form signed by their doctor when entering the lottery. Additionally, all selected hunters must pattern their weapon and attend a National Wildlife Turkey Federation (NWTF) clinic prior to the day of the hunt, unless they have proof of previous attendance at a clinic. Hunters may contact the refuge to pre-arrange the assistance of NWTF volunteers to call in turkeys. Lottery applications are available at http://patuxent.fws.gov or at North Tract Hunting Control Station. Turkey lottery applications will be accepted until January 31, 2012.
For more information on Patuxent’s hunting program, call Dionne Briggs at 301-497-5770 or visit http://patuxent.fws.gov. Patuxent Research Refuge’s North Tract and the Hunting Control Station are located off of MD Rt. 198 on Bald Eagle Drive, 1.4 miles east of the Baltimore/Washington Parkway.

• HELLUVA HUNT WYOMING - Helluva Hunt holds an ongoing annual October hunting event in Wyoming for handicapped and chair-bound hunters. This event is totally funded, the only cost to the hunter and one guest is for their transportation to and from the Douglas, Wyoming area. All meat processing from the hunt is free and there are free mounts available as raffle prizes!
Applications for participation in the Helluva Hunt are accepted all year long. Fifteen hunters are chosen in February to participate in the October Antelope hunt that year. The accepted applicants are immediately notified and licenses are applied for. Each hunter receives at least two volunteers to assist in their kill at the event. Although our volunteers return year after year, we are always looking for extra hands! It's a terrific trip, and highly recommended to both participants and volunteers. It truly is one Helluva Hunt! we hope you will consider becoming part of it!
