Not a giant rack but it has lots of points.
This is a weird site to see.
It was killed Dec 30, 2008 in Coosa County Alabama.

The two with the velvet still on well into the fall would indicate that there is a hormonal problem. The lack of testes would probably mean that they were not descended - which is rare but it does happen. As you are probably aware, the testicles are descended in most mammals so that the temperature can be closely controlled. Failure to descend will cause them to stay too warm in the body cavity, which ultimately leads to their failure. Where I'm getting at, is the velvet stage is ended by a surge in testosterone that starts the rut (neck swelling, aggression, and hardening of antler). I would argue that these animals would have lower testosterone levels than most bucks in rut. Interesting animals all the same. I definitely would have mounted them as well. The lack of testosterone would not negatively impact the edibility of the animal. Much to the different, the lack of testosterone (think steers) will make the meat more palatable. |
