You Have Instincts, Too

You Have Instincts, Too

By Ken Piper

Hunting is like many sports in that there are certain practices that are the accepted standards for success. In other words, there’s a correct way to throw a football or swing a golf club, just as there are correct ways to set up a treestand or to shoot a gun or bow.

Another way hunting mirrors sports is that when crunch time hits, there’s a certain element of unteachable instinct that can make the difference between success and failure.

While trying to do all the correct things, listen for that little voice in the back of your head. Maybe it tells you to move your stand, or to try your backup hunting ground on a given day. Or maybe it says to try your grunt call or to clock out from work and hit the woods for only the last 30 minutes of hunting light. Have you ever had the voice tell you to turn around only to see a deer heading your way?

The voice isn’t always right, but it’s scary how often it is. Listen to your inner voice, but learn from your mistakes, too. Continue to do what the experts say is right, but every once in a while, go with your gut, even if that means abandoning conventional wisdom. You’re a hunter; you have a lot more instinct than you might imagine.
