Smalltown Bucks

The Perfect 10

The Perfect 10

By Jeffery Patterson

Call it beginner’s luck or call it fate, but you can add another hunter to our ranks.

I got my crossbow from a friend who said he wanted to sew a seed in my life. At the time, I had no idea what he was talking about, but I decided to give this hunting thing a try.

I got up at 5:30 on the first day of Virginia’s archery season and was in a treestand in Bedford County by 6. I called my girlfriend for good luck and began my vigil.

I had read a few articles and heard about all the gear hunters use these days, but I didn’t have any cameras or food plots. At that point I just wanted to see a deer. Anything else would be a bonus.

At about 8:45 I almost couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw a buck heading my way at about 50 yards.

I tried to remember everything my friend told me, and when the deer turned broadside, I took the shot.

I waited a little while before I got down to look for my arrow. I didn’t find anything after searching for several minutes, so feeling rather upset I got back in the treestand.

PattersonAs I sat there thinking about everything that happened, something in my head told me to go look again. Maybe it was because I was more calm, or maybe it was just luck, but it didn’t take long to find a spot of blood. After that I found another, and then another.

Before long I was looking at my first deer.

I’m now hooked and will be a hunter for the rest of my life. This buck might not be a record, but I will hunt for the rest of my life. My buddy told me it was a perfect 10-pointer. I know exactly what he means!
