Hunters check 22,366 deer on firearms opening day

Hunters checked 22,366 white-tailed deer Nov. 28, opening day of Ohio’s deer-gun hunting season.

Hunters take 161,057 deer; harvest up 16 percent

Firearms hunters registered 161,057 deer through the third weekend of deer season, according to the Department of Natural Resources.
Preliminary results through the third weekend show that the number of deer registered was up 16 percent from 2016. Of the deer harvested, 53 percent were bucks, compared to 63 percent during the same period in 2016.

Harvest totals 1,053 turkeys during fall season

Ohio hunters harvested 1,053 wild turkeys during the 2017 fall wild turkey season, open in 67 counties from Oct. 14 to Nov. 26. This year, 11 counties were open during the fall turkey season for the first time.

Opening weekend harvest totals 51,365 deer

Hunters in Illinois harvested a preliminary total of 51,365 deer during the first weekend of the firearm deer season Nov. 17 to 19. Hunters took 54,452 deer during the first firearm weekend in 2016.

Lab confirms second hunter’s deer CWD positive

A 1.5-year-old buck, harvested in October in Sidney Township of Montcalm County, has been confirmed positive for Chronic Wasting Disease by the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa.
This is the 11th case of CWD to be confirmed in a free-ranging deer in Michigan.

104 elk taken during weeklong elk season

More than 89 percent of the hunters participating in Pennsylvania’s 2017 elk hunt have taken home a trophy.
The Game Commission reports 104 elk were taken by hunters during the regular one-week elk season that ended Nov. 4. For those licensed to hunt antlered elk, also known as bulls, the success rate was 100 percent.
