Moose lottery open, drawing will go virtual

Moose lottery open, drawing will go virtual

By Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife

The deadline to apply for the Maine Moose Permit drawing lottery is 11:59 p.m. May 14. MDIFW no longer accepts paper applications, which means applicants must apply online.

On the online form, applicants can indicate several preferences, including which wildlife management districts (WMD) they are willing to accept a permit in, and if they would accept a permit in another WMD if their name is drawn and all top choices are filled.

Applicants can also indicate a preferred hunting season, whether or not they would accept an antlerless permit, and their choice of a sub-permittee. The site also explains how the lottery system works.

The 2020 Moose Permit Drawing, originally scheduled to be held in Jackman at Unity College Sky Lodge, will now be a virtual event broadcast live June 13, 2020 at 1 p.m. The full results will be available online by 6 p.m.

Along with drawing the names of the lucky hunters, there will be some special presentations hosted by Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife biologists and game wardens that will focus on moose biology, management and hunting techniques.

Information on Maine's current moose study on how winter ticks threaten Maine’s moose population, why this is happening, and what can be done to reverse the trend is also available on the website.
