Mix It Up

Whitetails like variety in both their diet and habitat.

QUESTION: Can I put a fall food plot in a field where the rest of the field is left overgrown with natural browse? — Ray H.

ANSWER: Absolutely. In fact, it might even be more effective than converting the entire field to a food plot. Deer like variety, both in their diet and their habitat. While they travel to food plots to eat, they also feed while coming and going. Providing more, different varieties of food in a smaller, open area may draw them in earlier in the afternoon and delay their departure a bit in the morning.

One word of caution: If the overgrown area is thick, deer might bed there, which could make it tougher for you to reach your stand without bumping them. Make sure to approach slowly and quietly from the downwind side if possible.
