From Yamaha
Yamaha introduces a new Grizzly 450 utility ATV with Electric Power Steering (EPS) this summer bringing top-of-the-line features to a mid-level machine. With the new 2011 Grizzly 450 EPS, Yamaha continues to extend its line of utility ATVs with its proven EPS system already standard on the award-winning Grizzly 700 and Grizzly 550 models.
The new Grizzly 450 EPS packs Yamaha’s top utility ATV features into a mid-level machine: the groundbreaking technology of EPS, industry exclusive Ultramatic automatic transmission, push-button On-Command 2WD, 4WD and 4WD diff lock, along with an all-new one-piece frame and new rear sealed wet brake. Combining these new features with Yamaha’s trusted comfort, terrainability and toughness, and the new Grizzly 450 EPS quickly establishes itself as one of the most off-road capable and durable 4x4 utility ATVs.
The all-new rear sealed wet brake moves the brake discs inside the rear gear housing making them impervious to outside elements. In addition to keeping clear of mud and debris, the new brake system requires less pressure for equal braking force, resulting in less heat due to reduced friction, less wear on the brakes and an overall improved braking feel for the rider. Additionally, the new three-point mounting system provides increased durability and lasting rigidity.
The 2011 model also gets a new one piece frame with increased strength and reduced weight along with a new rear anti-sway bar. Even with the addition of EPS, the new frame helps bring down the overall weight of the vehicle by nearly 10 pounds.
The Grizzly 450 4x4 is powered by a 421cc liquid cooled, SOHC four-stroke engine that provides plenty of torque. The ATV breathes from a 33mm BSR carburetor, and a durable stainless steel exhaust enhances power delivery while keeping engine noise to a minimum.
Yamaha’s exclusive Ultramatic automatic transmission system provides smooth power and the industry’s best engine braking. Utilizing both centrifugal and sprag (one-way) clutches, the system keeps constant tension on the drive belt for minimal slippage and wear. High- and low-range, reverse, neutral and park are the automatic gear options.
Yamaha’s On-Command 4WD system enables the rider to match machine to terrain by selecting between 2WD, 4WD limited slip, or 4WD with full differential lock from a convenient pushbutton system on the handlebar.
The new 450 also includes a fully independent suspension system featuring 6.3 inches of travel up front and 7.1 inches out back. The system is coupled with nearly 11 inches of overall ground clearance providing access to a wide variety of terrain. The Grizzly 450 EPS is also equipped with Maxxis tires featuring a Yamaha-exclusive tread pattern mounted to steel wheels (the Steel Blue EPS version gets cast aluminum wheels).
The Grizzly 450’s plush seat design, full-sized floorboards and oversized fenders provide a comfortable ride. Steel racks featuring a Duragrip finish allow more than 250 pounds total carrying capacity (88 pounds in front; 176 pounds in rear), and the vehicle has a towing capacity of 1,322 pounds.
The new 450 also includes handy gadgets such as a multi-function LCD display illuminating a speedometer, odometer/trip meter, hour meter and clock, as well as gear selection; a waterproof storage compartment on the front fender, and water-resistant DC outlet for charging your cell phone or GPS.
The Grizzly 450 EPS will be available at Yamaha dealerships starting in July 2010. The first models will be available in Hunter Green (MSRP $7,499). This fall, Steel Blue with cast aluminum wheels (MSRP $7,799) and Realtree AP HD Camouflage (MSRP $7,849) will be available. The Grizzly 450 will also be offered in a non-EPS model that will be available in Hunter Green (MSRP $6,899), Steel Blue (MSRP $6,899) and Realtree AP HD Camouflage (MSRP $7,249).
