-- The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is closing the 2010 spring wild turkey hunting seasons on the Felsenthal and Overflow National Wildlife Refuges. The closure is due to the area’s flood conditions.
These closures will affect the archery and modern gun quota turkey hunts on Felsenthal NWR and the archery turkey hunting on Overflow NWR.
The extensive flooding is the primary concern of FWS officials. The spring season on the two refuges may pose a risk to public safety by concentrating hunters on small acreages of dry ground. A recent trend of declining turkey numbers and poor turkey reproduction may be intensified by current and future floodwaters on these refuges. In the short term, floodwaters on these refuges are expected to increase and flood conditions may persist beyond June 2010.
