-- If you're completely new to using topo maps and aerial photos as hunting tools, the best thing to do is get a map and photo of an area you already know very well. Take them with you and walk/drive your land. It won't take long to learn what ridge fingers, valleys, creek bottoms and crop fields look like on the maps. 

Once you get a feel for that, you'll be able to look at maps and photos of places you haven't been, locate the likely food sources, bedding areas and routes deer will most likely take between the two.

Then when you walk the area and select a few stand sites, you can then try to find possible alternate ways in and out of the area based on wind conditions and time of the day you'll be hunting.
