Newcomer surprises field while early rounds leader fails to qualify
Friday and Saturday quarterfinal rounds have narrowed the 2013 Top Bow World Championship field to eight elite archers.
These late-Saturday pairings will determine who shoots in Sunday's semifinal rounds:
1. Colin Boothe vs. 2012 Top Bow Champ, Randy Hendrix
2. Tim Gillingham vs. Skipper Boothe
3. Newcomer, Henry Bass vs. Luke Parker
4. Larry Goza vs. Scott Fletcher
One notable surprise development is the absence of Joseph Goza in the top eight. Goza lead the early pool play and was expected to contend for the crown.
"We were surprised Joseph didn't qualify after dominating pool play. But many of the guys shot much better in the quarterfinals than they did in the early rounds," said Top Bow coordinator Mike Foster. "They are catching on steadily, but I threw them for a loop with this year's surprise addition of a third runner."
Foster was referring to his yearly quarterfinal surprise, which in years past has been a everything from an alligator target to a running javelina to a charging bear.
Foster continued, "This year, I threw in a mid-range running buck to throw the archers off. It caught several of them off guard, but most managed to make the shot anyway. These guys are good!"
