Devin Sobotka of Lincoln, Neb., Southeast High School set a state record with 290 points at the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) state tournament in March. Kora Shedenhelm of Omaha Mater Dei Academy repeated as the top girl scorer in the meet with 284 points.
Both students will compete with their state teams during the national tournament May 10 and 11 in Louisville, Ky., along with student archers from 30 states as well as Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada, and Africa and New Zealand.
In May 2012, the archery tournament reached historic proportions when 7,804 participants competed at the NASP (USA) tournament at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center in Louisville.
State competitions conclude in early April. In May, those who qualify will compete in the national tournament, one of the most challenging skill events for students in grades 4 to 12.
In Nebraska, 460 elementary, middle school and high school archers from 23 schools competed in the culminating event in the state for NASP.
