I have had great success with both types of ammo.I was really pleased with Hornady SST ammo.

I never had that problem .................if I needed to track,it was easy and usually short.

Ballistic tips won't pass thru but those Core Lokt's will.I have been using ballistic tips only for about 10 years,I have never had to track a deer more than 20 yards in all that time.Just don't try a shoulder shot and they work fine.

I'vw never used a ballistic tip but have used a core lokt with my remington 270 and they always did the job. I also have used a core lokt i my wife remington 243. both have great knock down power.

Both are great bullets for whitetail.Shoot through the lungs, and avoid shoulder shots, unless you dont mind loosing a lot of meat!

i was just wandering weather a Remmington Core Lokt or Ballistic Tip.  i would like to use the bullet for deer and coyote hunting with my 25-06.

deerhunter,

I reload for my 25-06 Marlin XL7.  I use Nosler 115 grain ballistic tips.  This is the round I used for deer hunting and I am here to tell you they do a job.  I got a doe the second week of our gun season and was really impressed with that bullet.

I have used Nosler ballistic tips since I started reloading about 5 years ago.  This was my first year using the 25-06, I mainly hunt with a 30-06 Remington Model 700.  I use 150 Nosler ballistic tips in my 30-06.  Since using them I have not had to shoot more than once at a deer.  Five out of 5 deer dropped in their tracks using the ballistic tips.

I use to use Remington 180 round nosed coreloc bullets in my 30-06 and when I started reloading I starting checking the charts and specs on bullets and chose the Nosler 150 grain ballistic tip.  I haven't been sorry since.

What reading I have done is that for coyote and varmits use the 70 grain Nosler ballistic tip and the right amount of powder and you could get velocities close to 4,000 fps.  I have fallen in love with the 25-06 and especially the Marlin XL7 rifle that I bought this past year.  I have always been a Remington fan, everything is Remington and also 30-06, like my 742 BDL, 760 BDL and 700 ADL are all chambered in 30-06.  My shotguns are Remington, 1100, 870 and even my 22 is Remington a 552 ADL.  But this new Marlin XL7 is a great rifle for the price, around $340, and the 25-06 is a great caliber.

i know this is old, but i haven't been on in a LONG time.
i use SST's, similar to the ballistic tip, started with corelokts but deer would run... a little. i've shot 3 deer now with the SST including one 240 lb buck and none have taken a step. lose more to blood shot, but if you hunt public lands you don't have to worry about losing deer.

Core Lokt's & Ballistic Tip's performance/frangibility is dependent upon velocity. Ballistic Tips will simply expand at lower velocities.

For longer shots (300-400 yards & up) use a BT.

You may not get a pass through projectile at closer ranges with a BT but they really leave a mess inside.
