This was Ross's first deer hunting experience. He was lucky enough this year to qualify for the Youth Mentoring Program since he was 10 years old.
We got out to the stand around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10. After sitting for an hour and a half we started to get cold. Ross was getting anxious. Suddenly this buck appeared at about 70 yards right in front of us.
Since Ross was sitting on my lap it was hard to get the gun into position without spooking the deer. The deer started walking away when I decided to grunt at him. He stopped long enough for Ross to get a great shot through the lungs.
He ran about 70 yards and disappeared. Ross couldn't wait to get out of the stand and start tracking him. It didn't take long until we found good sign. We were able to track him about 70 yards and there he was.
He was a heavy 9 point with a 15-inch inside spread, 17-inch outside
