Louisiana Region 4 Reports 292 Bucks Harvested

From Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries

-- The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Wildlife Division Region 4 Office (Ferriday) reported that hunters harvested 292 deer, which is an increase of 43 percent from last year, during the bucks-only hunts on the Boeuf, Sicily Islands, Big Lake, Buckhorn, Red River and Three Rivers Wildlife Management Areas during December 2007 and January 2008.

"This increase in hunter success can largely be explained by drier and colder hunting weather during the season compared to last year's very warm, rainy season," said John Leslie, Region 4 biologist manager. "This success also proves that the bottomland hardwood WMAs in Region 4 continue to offer some of the finest deer hunting opportunities in the state."

A total of 3,964 hunter efforts were reported in the self-clearing check station boxes, which were similar to last year's hunter efforts. Although the total hunter efforts were nearly identical, there was considerable variation in individual WMA use. There was a large increase of hunter efforts on Big Lake WMA, and a decrease in hunter efforts on Boeuf and Buckhorn WMAs. Hunter efforts on Red River, Three Rivers and Sicily Island Hills WMAs did not significantly change from last year.

Every Region 4 WMA reported an increased bucks-only harvest when compared to last year. The 13.6 hunter efforts per deer harvested figure for this year indicate it was the most productive bucks-only hunt in the last five years for the Region 4 WMAs.
