From the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources
-- The Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort will be the site for several professional development workshops in June for scout leaders, teachers and home school educators.
The first in the series of workshops is Project WILD from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 23. The curriculum teaches students how to think, not what to think. Project WILD offers KERA-compatible hands-on activities emphasizing wildlife and the environment. The cost is $20. Next in the series is Project WILD Aquatic featuring critical thinking skill activities while highlighting water’s importance to people, wildlife and habitat. This workshop is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 24. The afternoon concludes with a tour of the Pfeiffer Fish Hatchery near Frankfort and sampling in Elkhorn Creek. Be sure to bring appropriate shoes for sampling near water. The cost is $20.
Participants can learn how to connect kids with nature by creating an outdoor classroom June 25 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. An outdoor classroom provides an informal, hands-on approach to learning. The Salato staff will assist with ideas and a landscape design for outdoor classrooms. The cost is $20; all participants will receive a Backyard Wildlife Habitat Kit.
All participants will also receive the appropriate curriculum with each workshop. Lunch is on your own for each session. Space is limited, and registration and pre-payment are required for all workshops.
The Salato Center has a variety of native animals for the public to see, including a black bear, an eagle, bobcats, elk, deer, bison, snakes and fish. The center has numerous indoor exhibits and miles of hiking trails open to the public. Fishing is available at two lakes. While some programs may require a registration fee, general admission to the Salato Center is free.
