Indiana Offers Free Online Safety Course for ORV Riders

From Indiana Department of Natural Resources

-- Indiana Conservation Officers encourage the safe and responsible use of Off Road Vehicles (ORVs) through a free online safety course.

The course, called "Today's ORV Rider," is designed so that the student can work at his or her own pace at a convenient time.

"For a number of years we have seen a steady increase in our ORV accidents" said Col. Michael Crider, director for the DNR'S Law Enforcement Division. "We made a decision a number of months ago to address the problem by offering this course.

"With Christmas just around the corner, we find it a perfect time for families who have just purchased a new ORV to become aware that ORV riding is much more than just starting the machine and punching the throttle," Crider said.

The online course presents the basics for ORV riding, including safe operation, the responsibilities the ORV rider has to others and the environment and how to be prepared for the unexpected.

Those wishing to test their knowledge can take a $30 Indiana certification exam or take one or more of the free practice tests. Buy doing either or both, the student should gain a better understanding of ORV safety and the responsibilities that go along with riding accident-free.
