The BTR's Golden Laurel Citation is awarded annually to honor the most significant whitetail rack entered into the Buckmasters Whitetail Trophy Records for that calendar year. The Golden Laurel Citation represents two historic elements awarded for great achievement. The laurel wreath, made from the laurel tree of southern Europe, was first used by the ancient Greeks as a victor's crown to decorate winning athletes in the Pythian Games. Subsequently, the laurel branch was, and is still used by European hunters to honor the game animals they harvest. Gold is the most valuable of all medals given for achievement of any kind, just as in the modern Olympic Games. It is fitting that a golden laurel wreath is the ultimate tribute to the most significant of trophy animals. The BTR Golden Laurel Citation is presented to the hunter but it actually pays homage to his excellent trophy.
