-- MONTGOMERY, Ala. 8/17/08 - Skipper Booth of Tuscaloosa, Ala., beat Tom Boatwright 162-137 in the final round of the 2008 Buckmasters Top Bow Indoor World Championship.

As a result, Booth bagged a $25,000 payday from Buckmasters and an additional $10,000 from Mathews bows, which is one of the champion's sponsors.

"I'm going to invest a majority of the money and maybe build a shop," Booth said.

Booth's road to the title nearly came to an abrupt halt in the 5th and 6th rounds. He edged out Clyde Huckeba of Oxford, Ala., 206-201 in the 5th round. The difference, Booth missed one target while Huckeba missed two.

Then Booth beat Gene Goddard of Brighton, Iowa, 145-139 in the 6th round. Both archers missed three targets, but Booth connected with targets that were worth more points.

Booth, who works as a pipe fitter for McAbee Construction, is no stranger to Buckmasters first-place payouts. He stood in the winner's circle at the 2008 Alabama Buckmasters Top Bow Indoor regional qualifier held last month in Birmingham.

His efforts there were rewarded with $2,000, a new Yamaha ATV and the Dan C. Busey High Score award good for an additional $400.

Booth credits his employer and co-workers for his success.

"Most of the people there know me and know that I shoot tournaments," Booth said. "All the guys were excited for me after I won the qualifier in Birmingham."

As for excitement, neither Booth nor Boatwright connected with the first deer, a 50-yard-plus shot to the left back corner of the course, in the final round. Additionally, both archers' 10th shots missed. It was Booth's shot that connected with the moving turkey target that sealed the victory.

"I hoped his first shot did not unnerve him," said Booth's wife, Connie. "He looked calm while he was shooting but my knees were shaking."

Boatwright of Perdido, Ala., again, had to settle for second place. Randy Hendrix of Winston-Salem, N.C., beat Boatwright in a sudden-death shoot-out round at the 2008 South Carolina Buckmasters Top Bow Indoor regional qualifier.

Boatwright's charge to the final round was no easy task. He beat Hunter Junkin, of Gordo, Ala., in the 5th round 195-185. Boatwright, who is an avid bowhunter, then knocked off Randy Barley of Brown Summit, N.C., 172-155 in the 6th round.
