An interesting conversation took place among a few of the Buckmasters staff members recently that led to the beginning of this project. We were talking about the current state of deer hunting throughout the country.
It was during that moment when we decided that we had to know what is going on with each state's deer herd. So, after numerous phone calls and e-mails, the data is in.
States use a wide variety of methods to arrive at deer harvest, deer population and public land figures. Even though the majority of the statistics presented are estimates, they certainly reveal that deer hunting is prospering across the nation and strengthening the economy. This information is intended to provide deer hunters with fundamental data as reported by state conservation departments.
In the 43 states we received data on, we calculate that over 6 million deer were harvested during the 2006-2007 deer season. Another interesting fact to note is our nation's sportsmen poured more than $76 billion back into the economy according to a national report, "Hunting and Fishing: Bright Stars of the American Economy - A force as big as all outdoors," which was produced by the Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation. The report uses the results from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's 2006 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation and statistics provided by the American Sportfishing Association and Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies.
