So heres the story. I was in my stand and hadnt seen a deer all morning. Near my stand there is an area me and Jr call the sactuary. It is a small finger of timber That is cut off from the rest of the public land by a small creek. As far as I know no one has been in there all season. after seeing no deer all morning I decided I was going find a way across the creek and try and still hunt that area so I find a way across and I get about 20 yards in and I jump a huge buck and two does.I tell myself I need to go slower and be quieter. I get another 20 yards in and I see a doe walking towards me. I freeze and thats when I see that there are 2 more deer behind her. a small buck and this guy. I figgure I will try and get him to stop at about 35 yards. then I remember the last buck I tryed to stop and how it spooked him instantly and he ran off. So I figgure I will take the shot while he is walking (something I have never done). well I hit him but it was pretty far back. He didnt know what happened, he jumped and slowly walks away. he jumps a nearby fence walks out into a field ,walks about 100 yards across the field and into the timber. I backed out, drove home and got jr out of bed. we decided to wait till 1:00 and go look for him. when we got back we went to where he walked into the timber and he was laying right there. It was my first kill from the ground and my biggest buck ever.
