I`ve been out in the woods a few times this year and noticed some strange behavior when it comes to does, for some odd reason when they get to an edge of a field the lead doe stops and looks out to the openess and then turns and runs away . It doesn`t matter where I sit they do the same thing pretty much everytime. They`re not winding me and I don`t think they can see me either what else could it be?

I saw the same thing happen on Friday morning. A doe with a fawn came out to the fields edge and started toward the persimmon tree I was near, then she just turned abrubtly and darted back into the woods. No head bob, stomping, blowing, or flashy white tail. Just like she changed her mind that quick. Then I heard the neighbors dogs barking a little closer than usuall. The dogs didn't come near the deer, but it was enough to convince me to change positions. It was 9:30am anyway and the wind had changed to a non-favorable direction.

I moved to a spot a hundred yards away and watched another doe with two fawns come in to check this other persimmon tree I was near. 20 minutes later, here comes a six point. He finds a few persimmons as well then proceeds to bed down 25 yards in front of me. I waited him out for 2 hours, and he never knew I was there. Never saw big brother or his daddy either like I was hoping.

A week earlier I watched a doe scramble away from an eight point chasing her. Our pre-rut is on. Perhaps the does you saw were acting a little uneasy because of a factor out there other than you. Could be a buck following closely, dogs nearby, or something on the trail that didn't seem right to them.

One thing to keep in mind. If a doe smells your location even after you leave, it is exactly the same results as if you are still there.  Wether the wind direction is right while you are there, she still might know your exact location regardless.  It might mean setting up several other locations, and keep them guessing a bit.

It would make sense if it were`nt for the fact that it happened the very first time I sat at this new location. But I think you`re onto something with dogs in the area, heard a couple of dogs that first morning. Could it be coyotes? or even some type of deterant like predator pee?

Most often when I encountered wary does in the field, it was almost always a short time later maybe  a half hour or so, a buck would appear, does with fawns in tow usually are quite jumpy with bucks around, when they are ready to breed, they will chase thier fawns off and then reunite with them later, have a good one and be safe out there, bob

Deer often require a combination of factors to spook. Generally they won't spook over a simple smell, since they encounter thousands of smells a day. Most times it requires a couple of things to make them run unless they have already been stimulated. Smell, sight, movement, sound or any combination can make them run. In your case, (and we can only guess at this point), it could be early rut which makes every one kind of jumpy at nothing. The deer could also be fairly young, not really sure what to run from and what not....the simple fact of an open field may make them nervous.
You might try an experiment. Try moving your spot to a tighter area inside the tree line, preferably at a junction of several trails. Be aware of wind direction and try and come in upwind of your stand. The tighter area with less open field may make them more comfortable. It will limit your sighting time, but you may even see some large bucks, since they will most often hold to the tree lines letting the does do the signaling. If they see or run from something, he is gone too. Older does will do this same thing, sending the younger ones out first and trailing to see if anything happens.
Hope this helps a bit.

It seemed to be an older doe the first time and the second time it was a younger doe. My problem is that if I try to set up just inside the treeline I`ll be right on the trail that they use, also I don`t have that much wooded area to work with. They could be in the early stage of the rut but I haven`t seen any bucks or any signs that they`re even interested yet.

I had 3 does last year that when they got about 100yrds the one would blow as they were running right to me, she would do it every time, there was some people that used to hunt were she always came out, I think one of them put something out that the deer didnt like.
