| After coming home from school to go hunting on the weekend of the 18th and 19th and having no success, I dediced I would come home again the next weekend to try my luck. My Dad and I woke up bright and early this past Saturday morning, got ready, and made our way to the woods. Generally the turkeys don't roost on us, but on neighboring ground and we have to get them to come to us. Fortunately, luck was on our side and we could hear three different birds gobbling from the roost in our timber. We set up about 100 yards from where we thought the gobbler was, and did a little tree calling. Once the birds flew down they started away from us, but as soon as they heard us calling the started back towards us. About 15 minutes later, I could see the gobbler making his way down the road towards us, giving us a show with his gobbling and strutting. He was closing in, when all of a sudden a few deer decided to show up. One of them went running away, but the other deer stayed by us and slowly worked its way towards us, not knowing we were there. Once it was about 10 yards from me, it knew something wasn't quite right and started stoping and snorting. This stopped the turkey in its tracks, and I thought for sure that my luck had run out. The deer snorted around a total of 15 times, and the turkey slowly worked its way toward our decoys a few steps at a time. The turkey eventually made it close enough for me to shoot, but i needed it to take a few more steps to get out from behind a pile of brush. Sure enough, a few minutes later it took those steps, and presented me with my shot. The turkey had a 9 1/2" beard, 1" spurs, and weighed 22 lbs.
