The flag of the United States is a symbol of our freedom and represents the efforts of countless generations who have protected and preserved the liberty that citizens of the United States and other countries enjoy today. Therefore I believe we need to respect the flag and our past, present, and future soldiers in any and all ways possible. Those ways include standing a saluting when the flag passes by, or the national anthem is played. I think you also need to know what the colors, parts, and what each fold means. Blue symbolizes vigilance, perseverance, and justice; red symbolizes valor and hardiness and white means purity and innocence. It does not matter where you are from or whether or not you are a citizen if you are here to be free I think you should honor our flag and soldiers. I also believe you must know how it originated. In august of 1892 a socialist minister Francis Bellamy (1855-1931) wrote the pledge of allegiance. The original read: “I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. In 1923, the words, “the flag of the United States of America” were added to make it read: “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” In 1954 President Eisenhower encouraged congress to add the words “under God,” even though Bellamy’s daughter objected to this alteration it now reads: “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of America and to the republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all.” I think that you should stand, take off your headgear and solute not only when the flag passes by but you should also treat a returning/returned or leaving soldier or veteran with equal or more respect when he/she passes by.
