three guy's are out and decide to stay at a hotel the room cost $30 so each guy pays ten dollars a piece.they go up to the room the room is trash so they go back to the clerk the clerk says yes that room is pretty  bad. so the clerk gives the guy's a five dollar discount so five dollars doesn't split in to three so each guy takes a dollar and they give a clerk a two dollar tip.

            so 9+9+9+2= 29 where's the other dollar?

The deal was $30 for the room. Then the clerk changed it to $25. The men changed the deal to $27 that is $9 apiece to the clerk and $1 each in their pockets. There is no "spare" dollar. The trick of this puzzle is adding numbers from two different deals. The price of the room was $30 and the refund was $3.

If it wouldn't a been good
I wouldn't a done it.

You don't add 9+9+9+2. The $2 tip is already included in the $27 they paid. You add 9+9+9+3 = 30. The $3 refund plus the $27 they paid for the room.

If it wouldn't a been good
I wouldn't a done it.

There is no left over dollar....... she gave them 5 discount,,, they each took one, and they gave her two...... that totals the 5..... plus the 25 they paid.... that totals 30.

10+10+10=30 - 5 discount = 25.00 and out of this leaves the 5 she gave back and each of them, 3 of them took 1, leaving the 2 they gave to her.  This one makes more sense.

It is called "adding the wrong numbers together to look for a dollar that isn't missing." I got this one thirty years ago and no hotel clerk has ever short changed me.

25 + 2(tip) + 3(to be divided between all of them, thus making the $10 they each gave into $9)
