.308 is a great all around gun. I have no bad opinions of them.

I am a little confused about your post though. You currently have a .280 which is a 28 caliber. A .308 is a 30 caliber. You would be getting a larger caliber gun not smaller. If your wanting to go smaller than a .208 I would suggest a .270 or a .243

Dirk,a 308 is fine. Also you could look into a 7mm-08,260(their about the same)Actually there is a whole list of short standard cases that you can chose from,an they all perform about the same, some are a little faster/more energy than others.Your 280 is based off a magnum case it is a shade smaller/slower than a 7mag.

The 308 has taken alot of deer around here. The 7mm08,260,270 and 243 are also some cal to look at.The 243,you have to be alittle more picky about shot placement.

The 280 Remington is actually based off of the 30-06 ,it is an 06 necked down to .284", it is also called the 7MM Express. And the 308Win is an Excellent Deer cartridge, in fact it is my go to gun for Whitetails!!

I own both a 308, and a 260, I must say I hunt with my 260 a whole lot more than I do with my 308. the only bad thing with a 260 is your limited on your cartridge selection. 308 has a ton to choose from.

Personally, I believe the .308 is hard to beat. I have hunted with one for 20 years, it has always done the job for whitetail, box ammunition is relatively easy to come by / cheap, it is not a "fad" round (here today / hard to find tomorrow) and the recoil is manageable in most any type of rifle. I own a lot of long guns and will almost always reach for my Ruger M77 chambered in .308
