After the season is over I want to look for a deer slug barrel.  I know I want one that is cantilevered for a scope.  I'm getting either a  Remington 870 or 1187 barrel.  Hastings makes a 12 guage, 1187 light contour barrel, but I'm concerned about a thin barrel wall affecting accuracy.  I could get a regular barrel and buy an extra forearm.  Hastings also makes a 26 inch heavy slug barrel for the 870.  Has anyone ever shot one of these?  I'm mostly a treestand hunter, so the weight isn't a big factor.  I think the accuracy and low recoil would be good.  Are the Hastings barrels better that the Remington barrels? I'd appreciate hearing about any experience you have had with these barrels.  As for the slugs, I am a devoted Lightfield user.  I've had great luck with them in the past.  Thanks in advance for your replies.

I like a heavy barrel, Hastings makes a good barrel, as for slugs it depends on what the barrel likes.

Remington has been making barrels for over 150 years, so I think you are safe to go with one of these.  I too, shoot lightfield slugs and think they are great.  The Remington barrels should withstand through the riggors of hunting.

Hastings make very nice stuff.

If you worried about those barrels accuracy, you dont know much about Hastings? hastings makes rifled slug barrels for the browning A5 right, there barrel turns the A5 into a 150 yard gun.

my opinion, you can get a barrel made by remington and it would cost a little less than the hastings, and it would probally be just as good.

For years I hunted with a 12 gauge Rem 1100 with the Rem rifled slug barrel with the cantilever scope mount. I never had a problem with it and shot deer out to 75 yards. I never had a chance to try farther, but 100 to 125 was very realistic, maybe farther with today's sabots.

I have used  the Hastings barrel on the 11-87 and used the spare forearm. It shot well. I used Win Partition Gold in it. I traded the barrel for a H& R 20 ga slug gun with a heavy barrel and haven't looked back. I shoot the Lightfield in the 12 and 20 I have and love it.
