what would be the lightest grain bullet from a high powered rifle that could kill a deer. the reason im asking is my brother is 10 and were going to start him on with my 20 ga single shot, but my dad has a 25-06 and they make 85 gr bullets for it. I use a 270 with 130gr bullets and we shoot 100 gr out of the 25-06 and it kicks harder than my 270, we also have a 30-30 but shoot 170s out of it and I think that might still be to much for him yet.

the 30-30 will kick less than the 25-06.A 26-06 is based off a 30-06 case, and a -06 is way more powerful than the old 30-30

Have you thought about a muzzle break or the managed recoil loads? I hav a 10 year old nephew that is very small and shoots a 243 with no problem,I would recommend one of the New England Fire Arms or Rossi combo deals.
The 25-06 may work with the 85 grn bullets, not sure never shot one .

Recommend a .223 or .243 youth model. My 8 yr old shoots the single shot 243, bull barrell and loves it. Check local pawn shops for a deal on a used one. If you are not ready to purchase go with the 25-06 with recoil reducion loads if you can find them for it.

I hunt deer exclusively with my 25.06. DO NOT USE 85gr BULLETS FOR DEER!!! The 85gr bullets are designed for varmit. They will likely wound a deer as they do not have the mass required to cause a deep wound channel that you need. The 85gr will likely explode on impact of the outer skin, causing a larger wound that may not kill, especially if you hit a front shoulder solidly. I could load a 117-120gr bullet and an 85gr bullet randomly for you. You couldn't tell the difference when it fires! It's not that big of a mass jump, however it is a substantial difference in design and weight distribution.

If a 25.06 is too much recoil, start with .223, 22-250, .243. Most of these cartridges are legal for deer, and do not do near the shoulder thumping that some of these calibers can do.

I'd really avoid a shotgun slug for a youngster. Unless of course you buy youth slugs that have lower recoil amounts due to lighter slugs and less powder equivalent.

I wouldn't risk using such a light bullet. although looking at the ballistics chart it does have enough speed and flbs to do the job, it is still risky. My sugestion would be to get him a nice remington model 7 youth rifle. I have this rifle in the 260 calibe, that has very little recoil, and I have dropped alot of deer in their tracks with it.

I shoot a Browning Stainless Stalker in a 25-06,I've shot 125 grain Nosler Partition they shoot great in that rifle,I've switched to the 110 grain Nosler Accubond's,I love them in that rifle the deer just drop were they stand. There is one thing you need to keep in mind,I get the impression that you are looking for speed in a bullet, just remember the lighter the bullet the shorter it is an less accurate it well be at longer distance's,the heavier the bullet the longer it is which will make it more stable an accurate at long distance's.Oh by the way my 25-06 has a muzzle brake on it (like to see them drop in the scope),hardly any recoil to it at all.
