I am wondering if anyone has experince with the new lower end rifles? (Stevens, 770, ATR, 4x4) Two summers ago I lost my job and had to sell my rifle. It was the sweetest gun I ever fired. (rem 700 BDL 7mag) I have convinced the wife to let me buy another. I don't know if I should buy a new one I can afford @400 or less or try to pick up a used 700? I am nervous about the thought of buying an in expensive rifle. If anyone has one, please tell me how you like it?

I bought a Mossberg 30-06 this year. Gave 330 for it total. Its a bolt action, and is shooting 1" groups at 200 yards. Has relatively no recoil with 150 gr bullets, and the rifle itself may weigh a total of 5 lbs. I am rather glad I did pick this up, the model I got comes in 06, .243 and .308

Last year I bought my Mossberg 100 ATR with a scope in .243 at Academy for $279 before taxes.  I love my rifle.  It comes in higher calibers also.  Less than $300 for a scoped rifle is a great price though.

Don't let anyone fool you.  All the rifles you mention will do you just as find at the 700 BDL will do.   Plus not put a hole in your pocket book.  I have several expensive guns and a lot of inexpensive guns, and they both put 1" groups or less at a 100 yards.  And none has failed me in the woods.  The Mossberg ATR really suprized me the most, added a scope and right out of the box, can't beat it.  I would go with the newer Mossberg 4X4, looks and shoots great.

I can attest for the Savage-Stevens model 200 in 30-06. Hard to believe that a sub $300 gun could shoot this good.
I am getting 1/2 MOA at 100yds with handloads.

My uncle has an older Savage 270 and it will drive tacks and another friend of mine also has a Savage 270 that is very accurate.

The Weatherby Vanguard series (all black synthetic) is a very nice rifle for the money as well.  Usually around $400.00.  If your local Wal-Mart still sells firearms you might check with them.

my inexpensive guns get used more than my expensive ones.

With expensive guns you are always worried about damaging them. If an enexpensive gun shoots as well, at least you don't have to worry about getting a scratch on it and lowering it's value.

I would go with a used one purchased from a good sporting goods store that gives the guns a good check before they buy/sell them. The stores around here have their gunsmiths check the guns out before they purchase them.

If you can hit what you are shooting at, does it matter what the firearm cost or who made it? The only thing that you should not compromise on is the "fit" of the firearm. If it does not feel right in your shoulder, don't buy it. Personally, Browning firearms do not "fit" me, nothing against them, they are fine firearms, but I will not buy one at a steal, because I will never fire it.

The only time that I would say go with a more expensive firearm is when the action is critical (pump action, semi-auto, or lever action). In this case, sometimes, the cheaper brands tend to not have as smooth of an action and feeding problems might occur. However, if you are talking bolt-actions or single shots, the action is pretty simple and easy to maintain.
