Indiana recently passed a law making it legal to deer hunt with a 44 magnum caliber rifle.  What is the difference in bullet drop at 100 yards for a 44 pistol v.s. a 44 rifle?  Ruger makes a bolt action 44 mag rifle.

I don't know that you'll find much info on the pistol drop...not too many pistol shots are taken at that distance. I'd imagine the drop is less with a rifle. However this is still a large mass and large diameter. It will fly more like a slugg than a typical bullet.

You should gain a little more velocity with the 44Mag,from a rifle, but the 44Mag just aint a 100yard cartridge!
I know some of you guys and gals have taken deer at 100yard and longer, Now don't fly off the handle, the 44Mag is a pistol round!!!!

I hunt with my ruger super blackhawk 7 1/4  barrel .44 mag JHP and yes at 100 yards you can drop deer. my longest shot is about 130 yards with a clean kill. I do use a scope though.
I would think that a .44 rifle would be in the same nieghborhood as a muzzleloader you should get about 1350 fps out of a mag round 200 grain. I practice ALOT with this pistol though but i know guys who can stay on a pieplate at 100 yards with iron sights.

No I dont have a reloader I suffer just like you and I also use the 240 grains I notice I misspoke in my first post. I kinda have the wife trained she picks up one box of ammo for me when she grocery shops each week she rotates the calibers so I have plenty for all my arms.(this is when she is likin me other times wellllllllll) Be carefull how you buy some states consider over 250 rounds for any weapon as an arsenal if you buy this much on a credit card you might flag.Check your state gun laws.

I live in Indiana too and I bought a new slug gun before they changed the law to that. I feel confident to over 150 yards with it and I don't think you would get any more range with a pistol cartridge rifle. I would consider more on getting a T/C Contender and you can use 7mm or whatever rifle rounds you want to with it and still be legal. Doesn't make sense but many laws don't...

I already have a slug gun and a muzzleloader that shoots well out to 100 yards. That's about max for me anyway.
I was just wondering about the 44.

I see. They look cool and I would love to have one too, but I wondered the same thing. I just can't understand why they don't at least make them legal south of I-70 where you start working into hilly terrain??? Plus as spread out as everyone is, it can't be any more dangerous than popping off a muzzleloader... Sure would be nice packing a lightweight .270 or 300 up and down hills instead of a dragging 12ga. or muzzleloader around!!!

ive got 2 models of the ruger .44 one is the never lever action and the other is the older semi carbine.

ive shotten pistol shells out of my lever action and theres quite a large difference in bullet results from the same grain bullets. also the pistol shells are quite a bit shorter, but have the same diameter

Uh,a 44 mag is a 44 mag wether it's down a pistol or rifle tube, but a 44 Special is shorter than a 44 mag.Forest the only rifle that Ruger is making right now for the 44 Mag is the 96/44 lever action, but in times past they have made them in single shot,a 77/44 rotory mag bolt action and several autoloading rifle/carbines,the carbines were called a Deerfield model.Lets see if this link will work http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/PS-GaugeCaliberHistory-RI.html

I used both Ruger 44 Deerfield, and a S&W 629, both shooting factory 240 gr JSP, and now reloading using 180 gr Sierra JHP.  The factory (Winchester), had shot great in both,  out to 100 yards, but found when reloading, I was able to make this a lot better.  Have taken several great bucks with both, from under 25 yards out to 210 with the rifle and 25 yards out to 110 with the pistol.  The 44 mag, is a under rated round, people just don't want to except, the fact that this is also a great bush gun.  But most of all, it's how well you place your shot that counts. I'm sold on the 44, rifle and pistol.
