I'm looking for a new rifle.  I currently use a 30-06 and mostly hunt whitetails.  I am now looking for another rifle that i could use elk and moose hunting out west.  I know my 30-06 would be sufficient for this but i would like something with a little more range and punch for 300+ yards.  what do you think?  I have been looking at the 7mm wsm. or a .325.

go with the traditonal rounds 338 win mag or 7mm rem mag. if your looking to stay with the 308 caliber look at the 300 rem ultra mag. i shoot the 30-378 weatherby mag and the long range ballistics are awesome. 300 yrd has the muzzle energy of a 7mm rem mag at muzzle with 180 gr bullets. personally i think the wsm series arent what there cracked up to be. chrome lined barrels and hard extraction isnt for me. if you want a 7mm look at the 7mm shooting times western. right up there with the weatherby and the ultra mag.

I've never hunted out west myself but I do hunt deer with a guy the spends half the year guiding hunts and hunting all over the country himself for Moose, Elk, Ram, wild pigs, etc.... He is an expert hunter as well as very educated when it comes to guns and calibers etc... From everything he has told me the 7mm is just an all around jewel of a caliber because it is powerful, accurate, and has great long range ballistics.... i myself have shot one plenty of times and loved it... its a great caliber

300 Win Mag would be my pick (high availability of ammo world wide) or possibly a 300WSM. The 325WSM or a .338 would be a consideration but I find myself more inclined to jump to .375H&H (high availibility of ammo world wide). The 7mm Mag also would be a good contender. There is a reason certain cartridges have weathered the test of time - they work.

I live here in wyoming an the 30-06 is a popular round out here an bagged many an elk an moose.I use a 7mm mag on elk an moose.I've just aquired a 300 ultra mag last year in which I bagged a moose this year with it,the 300 RUM is a very flat shooting round an alot of nock down power even at 500 yds out (2100 ft/lbs with a 180 gr.bullet).

thanks for all of the great input, i am not going to purchase one for awhile now as i just bought a new muzzloader for this fall, i will be purchasing the new elk rifle over winter, i will keep looking at the numbers but i think i have decided on a 300, 300WSM, or a 300 ultra mag.

the 30-06 is the most versatil gun you can have it has plenty of power for elk, bear , deer , moose, or anything you want to hunt but if I were going to buy a gun I would buy a 300 mag

I hunt with several Moose Hunters at camp. We have been successful with the following Rifles:
1. Bar .338 Semi
2. Bolt .338
3. 7mm Mag, Bolt
4. Bar 30.06
5. Tikka 30.06 Bolt
6. Steyr Mann .270, Bolt
7. Husqvarna .270 Bolt
I personally don't think the extra price for ammo and the extra kick that the magnums give is worth it. I just went out this morning and bought a Remington 700 SS 30.06, Bolt, with synthetic stock...I use 180 Silvertip bullets...No flinching or hammering when you shoot it. If I were you, I would go to a range with a couple of buddies and try their 7mm mags, or someone's .338. BEFORE YOU BUY...After 5 shots from EACH of them, I am sure you will know without a doubt which calibre you prefer. Those are my thoughts...

Since getting my moose this year with my 300 RUM I've demotted my 7mm mag to a deer rifle.
