I'm 33 yo who's never hunted a day in my life. Have always been fascinated with it though. Until recently I've only watched it on TV (Team Realtree Roadtrips, Hank Parker 3-D)etc. I chose to start out bowhunting because it seems closer to natural, and there is just something about a silent kill. I also have a 10 yo son and 7 yo daughter that I'd love to have experience hunting and the outdoors.

I'm looking for advice on how to go about getting started with bowhunting. I've had a bow now for 2yrs and have been practicing with the Block 4X4. Its a Golden Eagle the I bought from sports authourity.
Anyone near Charlotte NC if you know of any hunting schools or clubs designed for the beginner and family please post. If you could also email me ikaikaspride@yahoo.com. or jermaine.patterson@us.army.mil

Thanks!

jermaine - welcome to bowhunting, I'm sure you will find it will become an addiction like no other.

I am sure that you will find all kinds of people willing to help answer questions you may have, both here and elsewhere.  Some concepts are tried and true (using the wind to your advantage, safety issues with tree stands, etc.) and others are far more user opinion that you will have to experience what works best for you.  My first suggestion would be to go online and look up the NC department of fish & game (DNR, or whatever they call themselves).  They should be able to direct you to a good bowhunter education course that will get you started in the right direction.  From there, look around your area and I'm sure you will find some clubs that you might consider joining.  Many have 3D archery courses as part of their facilities that you could use for off season practice (and as a great intro to archery for the kids).

Good luck, and don't hesitate to drop me a line or post other questions here if you need help.

Jermaine. welcome to the wide world of Bowhunting and Archery.

for starters i would go to a local archery proshop and see if they have an indoor range. if not look in your Phone Book under Sportsmans clubs or Archery and join a good sportsmans club that offers archery and a variety of other shooting and outdoor activities. also i would recomend finding a club near you that has the J.O.A.D. program. it is great bonus for your kids. JOAD stands for Junior Olympic Archery Developement. it teaches kids the Basics and Fundimentals of shooting archery. from propper form to release. i coach the program here at my local club. i can't wait till my 9 month old son is able to shoot. once you find a good place to shoot and hang out at you can learn a lot from fellow archers that you shoot with. heck, they might even let you hunt their property.

as for the hunt itself, don't be frustrated if you don't harvest a deer your first time out or even your first season. enjoy just being out there. read every book and magazine you can get your hands on about Bowhunting. talk with local archers and us on here to find out what works, what doesn't, where you should put your stand..........

Good Luck, Hooah

Gentlemen I thank you for your replies, and can't wait to get out there. I have found an archery shop near me and have visited frequently since this posting. I'm like a kid in a candy store in this thing I see so many things that I would love to have. Discipline is key for a healthier wallet. I have though taken my old metal rest and opted to get the whiske bisket this thing is awesome. I'm down to about a 4 inch circle when shooting 8 arrows at a time. I know I'm probably shooting too many arrows before going down a retreiving them, but I'm looking at it like a workout. The more I'm holding the bow up the more training I'm giving those muscles. A try and put it dead center everytime but a shaking arm is a beast. Again thanks and good luck this season. God Bless. ARMY STRONG!

Tree Stand #8 hanging on for deer life

If you want to learn bow hunting watch the Primos hunting videos. the Buck Roar call is the best and take a raddle bag, buy a two man stand that way the kids can go along, use a spray on scent neutralizer. As for stand placement look at where the deer are traveling. Look for terain features that force them to travel in a certain path. Deer need food water and cover to survive they travel between these things for a reason. Surveilance from a distance using optics will help you know what they will do. Once you place your stand use flagging tape and measure 15 yds, 20 yds and 30 yds and mark those distances so you know which pin to use on your bow. A light MAAAACK or buck grunt will stop them in their tracks right where you want to shoot them but they wont be there long. Good Luck and Thanks for your Servide.
