I made a new ramrod for an original muzzlelaoder shotgun.  What is the best way to finish it?  I want to make it dark.  Is there a soecial process so it doesn't dry out?  Thanks.

If you are talking about what I think your talking about, what you want it Bluing stuff for coloring guns or what ever. Like this here

http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_34232_400004013_400000000_400004000_400-4-13

If this is like what you want there are other brands and stuff at the Gun Cleaning & Refinishing section at Bass Pro Shops page. Which is at.

http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Subclass_10151_-1_10001_400004013_400000000_400004000_?cmid=SP_OS_HUNTING_SHOOTINGACCESSORIES_GUNCLEANINGREFINISHING

I hope that this is what you want. I know this is what people use to darken steel or fix scratches on guns. So I think this is what you want.

Oh, and if you want it soon, and you do not have a bass pro shop or a cabelas near you. Check at Walmarts or any other place near you that has guns and/or gun supplies. I know the walmarts near me has it. But I have heard that some Walmarts stopped saling guns and gun supplies.

Oh, and I have never used the stuff before so I don't know anything about using it. My dad used it once when I was a kid to finish a Pellet gun kit that he bought that he built. But I done not remember what he did or needed or anything else. So you might want to ask the place where you get it at, or find someone here that has dune it before. Like 2chucks. Or I think it was 2chucks who posted a broadhead he made and blued. I know the more coats you apply the darker it gets. But that is about all I know about the stuff.

The ramrod is made out of wood.  The shotgun is an antique muzzleloader.

Oh, OK!!! Well going by what I was reading for some of the other stuff for this dye, this still works for wood. You will need to read the comments for these because as I was reading then for imformation I know some said not for wood and some said can be used on wood.

This must be a really old antique. I thought all of the ramrods or push-rods were made of some kind of metal. But I don't know anything about Muzzleloaders. But I wouldn't mind learning. I would like to try Muzzleloader for hunting deer at least once. Just to see if I like it or not. If i do it would give me more chances to hunt deer.

black walnut oil from the hulls of black walnut -it's an oil and will give it a dark finish it's almost impossible to wash off your hands so be careful handling it-when the nuts get ready to hull the hulls get black that's when you can get the oil

or you could go get a small can of a dark colored wood stain (like some variation of walnut) and apply a couple of coats. then apply 3 - 4 coats of clear polyurethane to protect it. no matter what you do, wood is naturally going to dry out over time to some degree, but the poly should slow the process somewhat.

MJ----- the question was for a stain on an original muzzleloading shotgun which would not have a poly type finish  granted poly coating would protect it from moisture it would affect the authenticity of the gun -stain finishes usually don't have the oil still in the color
