I was scouting around in a area that i knew was a good location the other day but just for some reason could not find any sign of deer coming through.  After waking the area a couple of times i decided to go back to the beginning and start following any little sign i could find possible, I ended up findin a nice trail with both doe and buck droppings going all through it, this trail follows straight through a old four wheeler path inbetween about 7 ft. pines so thick you cant see through them, and on the other side of the pines is a  bottom of hardwoods...on the other side of the hardwoods is the road which on the other side of the road is about a 200 acre. track of 10ft. pines and overgrown clear cut...Im excited about this spot and want to know whats coming through there but I also dont want to pressure the deer or risk spooking them, So my question is what do you guys think about setting up a trail cam on this trail??Corn..I would only be entering the area once a week but i know any resemblence of a human can push a mature whitetail to a new territory...Also....whatcha think about the spot..

heres a link to a sketch i created...i couldnt figure out how to get the freakin thing to show up on here as a picture..

if your setting the camera on the trail dont place it facing across the trail face it down the trail if possible if the use the trair on a regular basis then corn wont be need and a good camera will last 2 weeks or more before needing batteries and when you go in to check on your camera be sure to use your scent elimator just as you would when your hunting them to minamize your scent

Hmmm, sounds really great. I would really love to know why they are using the trail. Going to, or coming back from feeding, water...what? Either way here's my take on it. Deer usually range in an area of three to four square miles, depending on cover, food access, water, travel routes, and such. So, entering the area won't really push the deer out of your spot, unless you are constantly making noise or altering the land scape. So, do as KS Hunter suggested and aim the camera down the trail.

However, you might want to invest in one of those mineral rocks. Not only does it not stand out as something odd, it will provide a beneficial lick for the deer and keep them coming back to the area. Second, if your planning on setting up a blind, or stand, I would do it now. This will give the deer ample time to get used to seeing and not be spooked when it comes time for you to sit it.

Three more things...I would expand your scouting a bit while the season is still a good way out. Follow the trail through your section and see where it leads in the woods. If for some reason you run up on beds then carefully back out and leave it alone. Second, I'd go down to the road you mentioned and walk the fence line looking for jump overs. Third, backtrack the trail you originally found and see where it goes in the other direction. You may find a clearing in the section of woods that you can't see that might be the perfect spot for some 3-D camo and taking a chair to sit the area when the shooting starts and the deer start using heavy cover to move through. The more information you can scout up, and the more alternative spots you can find to shift to when hunting gets tough the better, and right now is the perfect time to get your scouting over with, and stand set ups done so that the deer have plenty of time to settl back to their normal pattern. Hope this helps a bit.
