Archery can be traced back to nearly 8 or 9000 BC.  The word "archer" came from a Naval term when archers were required to shoot at other ships.  They would have to shoot high into the air, thus 'arching' the arrow so it would get over the gunwales to hit the opposing soldiers.

1: What poundage of  draw weight was average for these archers?
2: What was the average, stress average, accurate range for these men to hit accurately?

No cheating, now.  See how close you get on educated guesses.

I would say around 90 to 100 lbs and distances up to 100 yds.

Hmmmm, only one answer. Well, I guess we're not much for trivia. So, tubby wins by default...but also by getting very close on the first answer.

Average draw weight was 80 to 100 pounds.
Accuracy was between 150 to 200 yards. An archer of yesterday, you must understand, spent his life doing his job. Historical digs found archers with badly deformed spines from drawin their bows for so long. While Hollywood would have you seeing a cloud of arrows, with only hope that would make an arrow hit its target, history was much different. It might take a couple of arrows to get the range and wind right, but a naval archer could drop an arrow in a 1 meter circle, depending on the archer, at 150 to 200 yards.

Heck...a fully armed knight of the 13th century was expected to be able to do what an average modern day Marine is expected to do. Wearing 95 pounds of armor is not much different than the 75 pound packs of our modern soldiers. These were some hefty boys and lived their professions.

Congrats Tubby!
