My step dad said that I should be able to handle the kick of a .270. He also said they're very accurate and I'm looking at a Marlin XL7 or XL7C for like $350. I can also get a .30-.30, but my step dad has one.......so if I wanted to use it, I could borrow it. I think that I'll grow out of a .243 quickly. ( I'm a big kid and weigh like 165..... | | you may be able to handle the recoil of a .270 but, why do you want to give up a rifle that's shooting good for you?if your .243 has a youth or cut down stock on it and it's getting a litlte short,buy a replacement stock for it.if your hunting just deer and varmits, i would stay with the .243.if your planing on hunting bigger game then go for the .270 or may want to concider7mm-08.,308.goodluck on your choice. | |

| | I like the 270 more because it gives you more knock down even at longer range,it also gives you alittle more margin of error on placement.JMO | |

| | I think the only way you'll "grow out of" the .243 is if you get a youth model. My hunting buddy's dad is 55 years old and has been shooting a .243 for a LONG time. The only thing you need to worry about is outgrowing the size of the stock not outgrowing the caliber itself. | | | |

| | All those are great calibers but you could also handle a 30.06. You Can shoot Remington reduced recoil shells but you are larger than my wife and she shoots the .06 with 165 grain reloads. If you plan to hunt larger animals than deer I would suggest the 30.06. | | | |

| im almost 47 & havent outgrown my 243  ,the balsitics of the 243 are better than some of the other caliburs listed when you look at long range drop & or accuracy,that said the 30/06 has a long list of diffrent bullets that can be bought anywhere ammo is sold,it can be down loaded with factory rounds so that the recoil is not a factor.,a good auto will drop the recoil even more.choices its great living in the USA & getting what you want when you want,mike243 | | | |

| If you want it for the sole purpose of deer hunting, you should get a 7mm-08. I have a remington mountain rifle in that caliber and I love it. You get the best of both worlds with this caliber: it kicks like a 243 but has the knockdown comparible to the 270/308. In actuality the 7mm-08 is the combination of the two. it is a 308 casing necked down to a 270/7mm bullet. I promise you the 140 nosler partitions will leave a whole big enough to bring down any whitetail. Check out the pic of the buck I killed thats posted on the bragging board section. | I voted for the 30-30. If you can, try to get range time with both 30-30 and the .270 then pick between the two.
If you can shoot the .270 comfortably, by all means go with the .270. In a few years you'll be happy with your choice.
If the .270's too much for you, right now, hold off and go with the 30-30.
But shoot both and then make your choice. | | | |
