Last Saturday I was excited for my first day of dawn-to-dusk hunting.  The morning started off well.  I saw a few deer walking up the driveway about 70 yards from my stand.  Around 8:30 I heard something coming in from behind, but, not daring to move I waited till they were right on me before looking.  I looked down between my feet and saw the doe sniffing the tree I was in and the fawn was messing with my pull-up rope.  Finally the doe stepped into a little clearing and I drew back.  I thought my bow was clear of my stand rail but I was wrong.  The bottom limb smacked the stand on release and my shot missed it's target....leaving me cussing as she ran off blowing and making a ruckous.

In the afternoon I hunted a different farm and around 6pm a doe and her fawns came in behind me.  I had a nice broadside angle at about 22 yards and let the arrow fly.  She jumped the string and I hit her high.  Me and a buddy spent 4 hours that evening looking for her and didn't find a drop of blood.  We found the arrow where she was hit (complete pass through) but nothing else.  I went back at sun-up the next day and found a recent track where something jumped the creek.  After about 500 yards I finally found 4 small drops of blood in a 30 foot section but nothing else.  A total of 9 hours looking and just couldn't find her.  It makes me sick to lose a deer, and definately doesn't help with the confidence.

If I hit her high above the lungs and below the backbone do you think she has a chance of making it?  We still haven't seen any buzzards flying anywhere over the property  and people have hunted all week there without finding her.

Tough to tell if she could make it. Hunting can be cruel sometimes, but that is the reality of hunting. Even though you feel like you had a bad day, at least you can add another notch to your experiences in the woods. All we can do is learn from our experiences.

SHE WILL PROBABLY BE OK. I HAVE A FRIEND THAT WAS NOTORIOUS FOR SHOOTING THEM HIGH IN THAT SAME SPOT. THERE IS A HOLLOW SPOT BELOW THE BACKBONE AND ABOVE THE VITALS.

a buddy of mine did the same thing last year. he saw the arrow hit above the lungs but below the spine. we followed the tracks for about 50 yards and found his arrow and broadhead. there wasnt one drop of blood, only a little meat on the broadhead. we never did find the deer.
