-- Over 180 youth trap shooters competed April 17-18 in the annual Arkansas Junior Olympic qualifier tournament held at the Remington Gun Club in Lonoke. The top male and female shooters in the competition will be invited to the Arkansas National Junior Olympic Development Camp in August at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
According to Chuck Woodson, the AGFC Arkansas Youth Shooting Sports Program Coordinator, competitors from this event could take their skills to the highest level of competitive shooting.
“If Arkansas youth shooters compete well at the international level, they could potentially compete in the 2012 Olympics,” Woodson explained.
Competitors shoot in international trap form, a challenging twist on standard American trap. In comparison with American trap, shooters competing under international trap rules encounter several differences, which include clay targets are shot at speeds roughly twice as fast from unknown angles and heights, and they can travel over 85 yards. Among other differences, American trap targets soar roughly 50 yards.
The 10 top-scoring individuals of this tournament will receive all-expenses-paid attendance at a Junior Olympic Development Shotgun Training Camp, set for Aug. 15-19 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Starting with the top scorer, these individuals are Alec Bolin, Russellville; Wesley Wilcox, Greenbrier; Cade Brown, Bee Branch; Dusty Darr, Dardanelle; Josh Hall, Mt. Ida; Nate Lutz, Russellville; Austin Odom, Benton; Gere Elam, Stuttgart; William Fryar, Oden; Hunter Seitz, Berryville and Kevin Weston, Mt. Ida.
Wesley Wilcox has been offered the opportunity to become a resident athlete at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and will be shooting for USA Shooting. Since he will already be in Colorado for his residence training with the other athletes, Kevin Weston will now get to move up into the top 10 position for the free trip to the Arkansas Junior Development Camp. The next fourteen scorers in line are eligible to attend, but must pay for attendance expenses.
