-- The second annual Feather, Fins, Fur Alabama Youth Weekend will be held at Foscue Park in Demopolis, July 23 - 25.
The three-day educational event is designed to introduce youth ages 9 - 17 to various outdoor activities in a safe and supervised environment. Feather, Fins, Fur is made possible through a partnership between the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), Ducks Unlimited (DU), the US Army Corp of Engineers (USACE), and the Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division (WFF).
Friday, July 23 will begin with a Hunter's Safety Course Field Day, and presentations from the NWTF and DU. Saturday activities include archery, duck calling, a retriever dog demo, catfish rodeo, camouflage class, wood duck box building and a WFF cannon net demonstration. Feather, Fins, Fur concludes with skeet shooting, boat rides and various prize giveaways.
According to Brandon Smith, USACE Natural Resources Specialist and co-founder of the event, Feather, Fins, Fur is a hands-on summer camp-like experience. "Parents are surprised by how much the kids take away from the event," Smith said. "Feather, Fins, Fur introduces the participants to several different aspects of what outdoor recreational opportunities are available in Alabama. The kids love it."
Registration is $35 per person, which includes a NWTF JAKES and DU Greenwing membership, and covers meals, activities, campsite and prizes. Youth participants must be accompanied by an adult.
