A very memorable 43-pound turkey!

Gray Mills and his 43-pound turkey.

Dalton Gray Mills loves to hunt more than anything else. He started hunting with his dad when he was four years old, and now that he’s seven, it’ll be this spring’s turkey hunt that will give him a life time memory.

He and his dad started turkey season by scouting birds on two different pieces of property they knew to have a turkey on them. Their first hunt turned out to be quite eventful. They saw a skunk, a deer and a fox and, finally, a two-year old tom turkey. Gray took a shot at the turkey but missed him at 30 yards.

He was feeling discouraged, but was still determined to get a tom turkey, no matter how much time he and his dad would spend. His grandparents would often find Gray and his dad setting up in spots on their property after they were done hunting his dad’s property which is where Gray’s best hunt occurred.

It was a Monday afternoon, and Gray’s dad located a tom and two hens behind the barn, back near a food plot. After calling Gray’s mom and asking her to bring him, the father and son were able to set up while the old tom was busy with the hens. Gray took a shot with his Remington, knocking the bird down for the count.

Back ToYBO Home PageThe tom had a 9-inch beard, and Gray and his dad were amazed when the turkey tipped the scales at 43 pounds. They think the bird might be a record—but what an incredible bird—for a seven-year old boy, or any turkey hunter for that matter.
