Zach's first turkey--a true trophy.
Zach took his first buck last season, so we were really looking forward to him taking his first turkey this spring.
Zach got out on opening morning of Missouri's youth season and we called, but the birds were very quiet so we moved to another spot and set up our decoys and made a few calls. We saw a couple of hens come over the hill, and right behind them was a monster Tom.
When he saw the pretty boy decoy, he folded up and came running to the decoy. He ran right into it, and then stuck his head up and gave Zach a perfect shot. Zach dropped him in his tracks.
It was Zach's very first turkey. It weighed 27 pounds, had a 13-inch beard and inch-and-a-half spurs. It was a true, trophy turkey. We took the bird to a taxidermist and are going to have the whole bird mounted.
This was a very special year for us both. When the youth season started this spring in Missouri, I was having a lot of trouble with my multiple sclerosis, but I wanted to go with Zach since last year I was unable to get in the woods. This year was different for both father and son.
