Are All Persimmons Equal?
If you’re thinking about planting persimmons, get a variety that’s right for where you live.

Are All Persimmons Equal?

QUESTION: I live in southeast Missouri and would like to purchase some grafted persimmon trees. What variety do you recommend and where would be the cheapest place to buy them? I’m looking to buy 20 trees.

ANSWER: Looking at the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone map, I’d say you’re probably in Zone 7. You can confirm this by viewing the map online.

That being the case, I would suggest you select one of the following varieties that best suits your desired result:

* Ichi – A fairly cold-hardy variety that ripens early (September).
* Great Wall – Is a bit hardier and produces larger (3-inch) fruits that ripen in September and October.
* Jiro – Sometimes, called Fuyu, produces large fruit in October and November and has a wide tolerance range.
* Saijo – Is a prolific producer of larger fruit, ripening in early November.

As to where you buy them, well that’s on you. With a little effort you can probably find a nearby nursery that stocks some, if not all, varieties. You could also check Realtree Nursery at: www.realtreenursery.com.

And for cost, bear in mind that you get what you pay for. Buy cheap stock, and you might experience poor survival. I would also recommend buying container-grown stock rather than bare root stock. The latter will result in very poor fibrous root branching and poor transplant success.
