308 is a fine rifle, what are you hunting? It is one of the files I use and if it was all I had it would be great! |

a 243 with win 100gr power point ammo will/would be just as good a rifle round combo as a 308 and any round combo for deer. now if your in the market for a new gun any excuse will do. the 308 will have moderatley more recoil. good luck |

I would look at the 7mm-08, 260 remington, 270 winchester, or a 25-06. All these have low to moderate recoil and will take a deer down with ease. The 260 and 270 being on the moderate recoil side. |

308 Win is a fine choice for Whitetails,I'ts my personal preference. Mild recoil, and extremely accurate. I've taken many deer with the 308 Win. It will flatten deer, If you place your shot, where it needs to be! And ammo is easy to find,in just about every bullet weight, and every manufacturer. GO FOR IT! You can choose from many gun makers,Ruger,Remington,Savage,Winchester,ETC. there all good, It depends on how much you want to spend. |

Congrats on the new rifle! I know I'm late adding my two cents, but here it is...lol Don't limit yourself to only youth model rifles. My father gave me his .30-06 and I had a youth stock put on it. It fits me perfectly and the recoil is only a little more than a 308's. Besides, when you are shooting at your buck-of-a-lifetime, you aren't going to feel any of the recoil (or at least I don't, I'm way too excited to even notice it!
Happy hunting and good luck,

.308 is a fine choice and the the only place where a 30-06 becomes of more value is that it is easier to find reloading data for heavy (over 180gr ) bullets. Actually anything Large that you would need those for, you would be better off with a heavier caliber rifle like a .338 , 375H&H, 450 Marlin etc. There are lots of great balistic charts available for .308 and it is a really fun gun to shoot just enough kick not too much. |
