Have Scrape, Will Travel

Have Scrape, Will Travel

By Ken Piper

Mock scrapes are even better with a touch of the real thing.

More hunters are experimenting with mock scrapes to fool bucks and get them riled up. Mock-scrape kits contain everything you need to create a scrape, but it never hurts to add another level of realism. The next time you make a mock scrape, use dirt from a real scrape to take it to another level.

Take a shovel (a portable army-style shovel works great) and scoop earth from a real scrape and put it in a plastic container or resealable freezer bag.

Take your prize to your mock scrape and dribble in the collected dirt. You also can use transferred dirt to make a buck think an intruder is moving in on one of his real scrapes.

As always, take all possible precautions to prevent contaminating the scrapes with your scent. Wear rubber boots and gloves, and don’t let the scrape material come in contact with anything that is going to leave trace scent.
