Rimfire Roundup Remedy

Rimfire Roundup Remedy

By Bruce King

With squirrel season upon us, and since many Buckmasters fans also hunt small game, here is a simple tip for those of us who hunt with .22s and rimfire rifles.

Trying to reload on the run and scrambling to find more ammo in your pockets is difficult, especially when you’re trying to keep one eye on a limb-hopping bushytail.

It’s also annoying to come home with a pocketful of lead ammo. An unaccounted round left in your pants could potentially go off in the clothes dryer, so keeping tabs on your bullets is a smart thing to do.

I came up with a simple and effective way to do this, giving me the ability to store, count and access my .22 shells before and after the hunt.

To keep my extra rimfire rounds rounded up, I use a small, squeeze-type coin purse.

Reaching into my pocket to retrieve bullets is easy now, and the coin purse is the best way to access them quickly whenever I need to load more rounds into my tube-feed rifle.

If you don’t have one of these old change-holder purses lying around somewhere, most banks will gladly give you a coin purse. I’ve found they hold 12 to 15 rounds without becoming too bulky.

Even if you use the coin purse, don’t forget to double check your pockets for strays before doing your laundry. They can still escape.
