Worth the Wait

Worth the Wait

By John Mitchell

It took a few years, but when Micah got his first deer, it was a good one.

I started taking Micah to the dove lease when he was 7, and he started deer hunting with me when he was 9. Micah has developed a love for hunting and being in the woods.

Even so, it felt like he would never get his first deer. It seemed like no matter what, something always prevented him from that first whitetail. We even had a jogger run though the field while hunting with family In Fredericksburg, Texas. I wouldn’t have believed it had I not seen it myself.

After years of being patient and not giving up, Micah, at age 13, finally got it done. It happened on Dec. 8, 2017, while hunting in Laredo. It might have taken awhile, but, man, it was worth the wait. His 11-pointer scored 147 1/4.

Worth the WaitMicah was grinning from ear to ear, and I got so emotional that I had tears in my eyes. My son had just shot his first buck, and I couldn’t have been more proud. I can’t say who was more excited, me or him. I didn’t even hunt that weekend, but it was the best hunt I have ever been on.

He shot the deer in the shoulder and dropped it like a rock. It was amazing to watch as my son got his first deer. That it was a big buck was secondary, but certainly an added blessing.

When I asked him how he felt about his first deer, Micah said he was blessed and thankful for such an opportunity. Did I already tell you how proud I am?
