Agency reports CWD testing results delayed

By Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency

Test results are now taking up to six weeks or longer to get back from the lab TWRA contracts for doing testing. Previously, results for much of the season had been available within two weeks.

The increase in turnaround time is due to several factors beyond the Agency’s control. They have exceeded 10,000 samples this season so far, and currently about half of those are still pending. The lab is working diligently getting caught up with the extremely high volume of testing.

To expedite results, the Agency is seeking an additional lab to help with CWD testing for the remainder of the season.

Results should be identified as detected, not detected or pending.

To keep CWD from spreading, the goal is to keep the number of diseased deer in the affected area to a minimum, and reduce disease rates where possible. The Wildlife Commission established a CWD deer unit with specific regulations that are science-based and data-driven. More information about the TWRA's response is available here.
