Another deer season on the horizon with updated regs

Another deer season on the horizon with updated regs

By Minnesota Department of Natural Resources

If it’s August, that means hunting regulations are out and licenses are on sale. Hunters preparing for the upcoming season can find out what's new in the regulations book and talk with local wildlife managers at deer open houses.

Find out what’s changed with 2019 Hunting and Trapping Regulations available online.

There are expanded feeding and attractant bans. The area where deer feeding and using deer attractants is prohibited will expand starting Sept. 1 in areas of central and southeast Minnesota where CWD was detected in farmed or wild deer.

Feeding and attractants increase the risk of disease transmission between animals by bringing them together in close contact, which is a mechanism for CWD spread.

The youth deer season, previously only available in the southeast, northwest and Twin Cities metro permit areas, has expanded statewide. The season runs Oct. 17 through Oct. 20, for youth hunters ages 10 to 17.

Deer permit areas within a CWD management zone, in southeast and now in north central Minnesota, are part of a new 600-series permit areas. The metro deer permit area will be renamed to 701 from 601.

Minnesotans who hunt in southeast, north central and central Minnesota need to be aware of mandatory CWD sampling and carcass movement restrictions for their particular areas. Find out more about chronic wasting disease regulations online. https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/cwd/index.html Full regulations are available here.

To make it easier to comply with carcass movement restrictions in southeast and north central Minnesota, the DNR is setting up dumpsters in disease management and control zones so hunters can process their deer and dispose of the remaining carcass parts.

Find out what restrictions are in place for moving carcasses across the state and into the state on the carcass import and movement restrictions page. More information on dumpsters will be posted on the DNR’s CWD page closer to the season.
