Rattlesnake festival March 9-10 draws crowd

Snakes and wildlife exhibits, cars and archery, crafts, food and rides are among the features of Georgia’s popular Rattlesnake and Wildlife Festival. The 52nd annual event happens March 9 and 10 in Claxton.

Highlights vary from a birds of prey show by Georgia Southern University’s Center for Wildlife Education, a 3D archery tournament, and the Rattlesnake Run. Thousands of visitors will take in more than 100 vendors, including Department of Natural Resources booths featuring live wildlife and hunting and fishing simulators.

The former rattlesnake roundup saw the number of snakes surge in the state after it stopped buying and selling wild-caught rattlers in 2012, a change supported by conservation organizations.

Now geared to wildlife education, the festival routinely draws thousands. Festival hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 9, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 11.
